It took years for me to experience rum until I also found the amazing simple drink Daiquiri. I have today been into rum for a decade and always had it plain in a glass. I could enjoy my nose for hours before I even started to sip it. Such a pleasure to find the different scents of such an impressive product as rum is.
I started like most people with a Ron Zacapa in a whiskey glass. It was an amazing experience and I also had to buy a bottle and two or three more. I found other rums that were similar to the Zacapa and started to get to know the market better. Mostly Spanish rum was available on the shelves where I am in Sweden. So not at all difficult to find a Spanish production style such as Diplomatico or QRM. Simple sweet rums that ar of a finer quality.
The darker, the darker
Rum is on a regular basis better the darker it is. It is supposed to be more mature the darker it is but that’s only a misunderstanding in general. Darker rum is darker because it’s darkened. It can also be colored or simply produced that way because it is matured that way.

because of the lack of international regulations, for good or bad. Rum must be made from sugarcane juice or molasses. That is the only regulation. It is of course a regulation but in general, one can make rum in Barbados, ship it to Germany, mature it again, add some sugar before bottling and make it your own brand.
Rum to Daiquiri
Today I have had several Daiquiris also made by some famous rum nerds such as Joshua Singh. A really good Daiquiri to me is made from Jamaican overproof rum. That means it is a white rum not matured on a wooden barrel and it is straight from the distill about 126 proof or 63% ABV or Alcohol strength.
This is maybe the most simple drink to make and also the best rum drink easy to mix and make. You just need some fresh lime, sugar syrup, and a bottle of good rum. A shaker is preferred and a nice rum glass to make it work.
One can use any rum and like to make a Daiquiri and it is of course your choice to make.
One way to mix your drink is to simply find your measurements. Probably something like 5/3/2 with ingredients like Rum, lime, and sugar. Depending on the glass you use it can be perfect with just a little 10cl drink on a hot summer evening. But probably you will want to try several mixes and also different rums to find your experience rum drink.
